Supermarkets are charging passengers 8 percent more fuel for Christmas, though wholesale prices remain the same.
The FairFuel UK campaign team analyzed prices at 122 gas stations at major supermarkets – Asda, Tesco’s, Sainsbury’s and Morrisions – and found that gas station prices in December were much higher than a year earlier.
That’s because supermarkets didn’t offer gas discounts this year, like B.10p off a liter of fuel if you spend £50 at the store, as they did in previous years.
Prices have not been lowered, although wholesale prices have remained the same as last year, and the government has cut fuel taxes by 5d per liter through the end of March.
FairFuel has also calculated that supermarket prices should average under £1.40 for petrol and £1.60 for diesel, but average between £1.52 and £1.75.
Speaking to Times Radio, Environment Secretary Mark Spencer urged supermarkets to “try to take care of their customers.”
He invited people to look around, adding: “When you move your order to places where prices are low, and now there are many independent gasoline dealers whose prices are basically lower than supermarkets, you know, use it, use your consumer. strength to bring down those prices.”
Currently the cheapest supermarket for fuel is CostCo. Although prices vary by location, London’s Watford costs 137p a litre, while Tesco, Asda and Morrisons sell for 148p-149p in the same region.
CostCo is a big supermarket and you need to be a member to shop here, which starts at £15 a year. Only certain professions can join, but this includes a range of professions such as accountants, doctors, lawyers, surveyors and civil engineers.
CostCo operates 19 gas and diesel filling stations (see below for locations).
More demand not only supermarkets.
Overall, according to the RAC, motorists will pay more than a quarter more for fuel this year than in 2017.
A tank of unleaded petrol for a 200-mile trip now costs £34.77, up from £27.41 five years ago, up 27 percent. This is also £33.11 more than last year.
Similarly, those who drive 100 miles now pay £17.38, up from £13.70 in 2017.
Gasoline costs an average of 152.96 pence per liter, which is 7 pence more than on December 22, 2021 (145.66 pence). However, diesel is 27p more expensive at 175.75p.
This means holiday drivers will pay almost £4 more – £84 for a full tank – compared to last Christmas.
RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “With the cost-of-living crisis making this one of the toughest Christmases ever, it’s even worse to know that drivers are callously inflating gas prices, making this the most expensive vacation ever. on the streets.
“The Big Four Supermarkets, which dominate UK fuel retailing, have resolutely refused to cut their gas station prices significantly to reflect what has happened with the massive drop in wholesale prices for the fuel they use.”
He said the UK is now in a “strange situation” with many small independent retailers charging much less for fuel than supermarkets.
The RAC is urging motorists to look for the cheapest fuel, and FairFuelUK is urging the chancellor and prime minister to announce that there will be no fuel tax increase in the March budget.
Williams added: “We are urging supermarkets to lower gasoline and diesel prices accordingly to give drivers the Christmas gift they deserve.”
