Metropolitano de Lisboa starts work on upgrading three more escalators

Metropolitano de Lisboa (ML) is starting work this Wednesday to upgrade three flights of stairs at the entrance to Largo do Chiado as part of the start of the third phase of the Improvement and Modernization Plan, the company said.

ML said in a statement that the work is part of a contract that includes the replacement of four escalators and the upgrade of three more at Baixa-Chiado station.

“This intervention, worth a total of 1,470,047 euros (plus VAT at the current rate), is part of an extensive adaptation and modernization plan for stations that Metropolitano de Lisboa is implementing as part of the National Plan to Promote Accessibility,” says ML.

The sealing work on stairs 2, 4 and 6, as well as the assembly of the shipyard, began today and will take place at the entrance to Largo do Chiado.

The carrier assures that customers will be guaranteed the operation of the existing mechanical stairs in the ascending direction, making the descent of the side pedestrian stairs.

“Passengers with reduced mobility can access the station through the existing elevator platform at the entrance to Rua do Crucifixo, and for this purpose they must request support through the assistance point located next to the handrail or through the Metropolitano de Lisboa staff present at the station,” mentioned in the note.

The replacement of the four flights of stairs is expected to begin in September this year.

The company recalls that it has already invested about 5.12 million euros, predicting that by 2025 ML will have 52 stations with full availability.

“This number does not include the new stations provided for in the expansion plan, which will already be open to the public with all the necessary equipment and facilities for full accessibility,” says Metropolitano.

The company indicates that the work should be completed in the last quarter of 2023.

He also points out that out of “the 56 stations in the Metropolitano de Lisboa network, 43 are currently accessible (77%), meaning they provide full access for people with reduced mobility via elevators between the ticket hall and the surface. , as well as between the atrium and the pier, as well as mechanical stairs and / or moving walkways.
