A study by Drinkin-Straw analyzed the number of parks, gardens, nature reserves, forests and playgrounds in European countries to determine the city with the most green spaces per 100,000 inhabitants.
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, rounds out the top five with 61 green spaces. The 61 green areas consist of 25 parks, 26 gardens, a wildlife area, seven playgrounds and two forests. There are 9.36 green spaces for every 100 thousand inhabitants of the city.
The study found that the French capital Paris is the greenest of all European capitals, with 325 green spaces including 171 parks, 127 gardens, a wildlife area and 16 playgrounds. There are 13.28 green spaces for every 100 thousand inhabitants.
In second place, despite having a smaller population, is Luxembourg City, with 13 green spaces consisting of 8 parks, a garden and four playgrounds. There are 8.51 green spaces for every 100 thousand inhabitants.
Dublin, Ireland’s capital, comes third on the list with 66 green spaces, including 34 parks, 15 gardens, seven nature and wilderness areas, three playgrounds and a forest. There are 9.33 green spaces for every 100 thousand inhabitants.
Cardiff, the capital of Wales, comes in fourth with 37 green spaces, including 18 parks, three gardens, five wilderness areas, three playgrounds and three forests. There are 5.54 green spaces per 100,000 inhabitants.
The English capital London ranks 24th on the list because, despite being the city with the most green spaces (356 in total), it fell out of the top ten in terms of the city’s population.
