Another 40 million euros to restore 29 Portuguese monuments

The Monastery of Saudasan (Montemor o Novo), the Walls of Santarem, the Palace of Sant Lourenco (Funchal, Madeira), the Church of the Convent of Santa Clara (Vila do Conde) or the National Museum of Machado de Castro (Coimbra) are among the 29 monuments, archaeological sites and museums included in the reprogramming of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which now includes an additional 40 million euros for the restoration and preservation of cultural heritage.

This new cost is added to the originally planned 150 million euros (total now 190 million euros), with 29 new interventions added to the 49 that have already been programmed and planned (78 beds).

“PRR is a historic opportunity, perhaps unparalleled in recent decades in Portugal, because it corresponds to the largest investment in the rehabilitation, preservation and restoration of heritage,” said Culture Minister Pedro Adão e. Silva at the presentation of a proposal to reprogram the PRR for cultural heritage at the Museo Nacional Frei Manuel do Cenaculo in Évora.
