Two French tourists were rescued this Saturday by a helicopter crew from the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service after spending the night in a remote area in the north of the island, the agency said.
The alert was issued at night and reported two tourists missing in Levada do Rei, in the municipality of Santana.
“The Santana Volunteer Firefighter Mountain Rescue Team was immediately activated and managed to locate casualties in a hard-to-reach area by requesting air assets on Saturday morning,” the Civil Protection Service said in a statement.
A helicopter flew into the area with rescuers and a winch operator to pick up two tourists, who were then taken to Dr. Nelio Mendonza in Funchal.
Two people were not seriously injured.
