Four areas in Portugal are under an orange warning this Sunday afternoon due to predicted downpours that could be hail, thunder and strong winds, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said.
The areas of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda and Vila Real are under orange alert from 12:00 to 19:00 this Sunday and then down to yellow.
The IPMA Orange Alert for these four areas is due to the forecast for heavy rainfall, areas of hail accompanied by strong gusts, and favorable conditions for thunderstorms.
The Castelo Branco area will be under a yellow warning from 12:00 to 21:00 also due to the forecast of heavy rains, sometimes with hail, strong gusts of wind, especially in mountainous areas, and favorable conditions for thunderstorms.
According to the IPMA, an orange warning, the second highest on the scale, is issued for “moderate to high risk weather conditions.”
A yellow alert, the third highest on the scale, is issued by the IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain weather-dependent activities.
