This Thursday it became known that a 33-year-old man was taken into custody on charges of 17 crimes, including robbery, aggravated theft and credit card abuse, in Sao Miguel and Pico, Azores.

According to the PSP regional command in the Azores, the suspect was arrested in “the last days” after “a few steps to outline” the alleged robbery of a Spanish tourist at the Vigia das Feteiras viewpoint, on the island of Sao Miguel, after a van was stolen the day before.

After “the diligence carried out by the PSP investigators, it was possible to collect sufficient consolidated evidence pointing to the accused as the author of a number of other crimes committed not only on the island of Sao Miguel, but also on the island of Pico,” according to the PSP, in a press statement.

Also, according to the PSP, the defendant was also responsible for two robberies, “in the middle of the night, in residential buildings” in the parishes of Livramento and Fajan de Baixo in San Miguel, “appropriating several valuable items and, also, from the victims’ credit cards, which he later used for illegal payments” at various points on Sao Miguel Island.

The PSP adds that it was still possible to collect elements linking the suspect to two other robberies that recently took place inside cars, which also resulted in the theft of bank cards.

The man is also suspected of three crimes of aggravated theft committed in March in São Roque do Pico at a home and commercial establishment.
