Residents of Lisbon with a Navegante pass can use Gira bikes around the city for free from this Monday, ten days after the measure was introduced for young people and seniors with this pass.
As of May 26, this free pass has been made available to all young people living in Lisbon, over 16 and under 23, as well as to citizens over 65 who already have this free pass.
This Monday, the measure applies to all residents of Lisbon with a Navegante pass.
Introducing the measure, Mayor Carlos Moedas (PSD) said the goal is to advance the city’s decarbonisation, so from this Monday the initiative will be available to all residents with a tax address in Lisbon who buy a pass.
To use Gira for free, people under 23 and over 65 simply need to show in the mobile app that they have a free Navegante pass.
Otherwise, it is necessary to prove that they are residents of Lisbon, so they must report to the EMEL store (Mobility and Parking Company in Lisbon, which manages Gira) with proof of residence through any invoice for free use. Gere, according to Carlos Moedas.
The mayor also said the initiative “is a movement” that is part of “everything to do with decarbonizing the city and started with free public transport” and will now transition to soft mobility.
Carlos Moedas defended that the entire Lisbon metropolitan area should set an example and start the path towards free public transport for young and old alike, but acknowledged that it “depends on other mayors”.
In Lisbon, according to the council, there are now more than 2,850 parking spaces at 146 stations.
The number of Gira bikes exceeds 1,000 and the goal, according to Carlos Moedas, is to double that number to 2,000.
