Fixed broadband traffic (the amount of data consumed on the fixed network) hit a new all-time high in Portugal in the first quarter of the year, up 16.4% compared to the same period in 2022. Comunicações (Anacom), average monthly traffic per access was 270 GB, representing an increase of 12.5% over the first three months of last year.
The same report released yesterday shows fixed broadband penetration among the population was 91.7 per 100 households, up 3.2 percentage points (pp) higher. Compared to the same quarter in 2010, the number of connections to fixed broadband increased by 152,000 connections (an increase of 3.5%), reaching 4.5 million.
Optical fiber (FTTH) was the main form of fixed broadband Internet access, reaching 64.4% of total accesses, up 3.4 p.p. more than in the first quarter of 2022. FTTH has also been responsible for the rise in access. Over the past 12 months, the number of accesses supported by optical fiber has increased by 246,000 (9.3% more).
Fixed broadband Internet access supported by cable TV networks decreased by 0.8% and accounted for 26.3% of the total. Fixed access supported on mobile networks fell by 5.9% (had a weight of 5.5%). ADSL accesses continued their downward trend to 30.6% (which is 3.6% of total accesses).
Recall that in July 2022, Portugal was the fourth country in the European Union with the highest share of accesses with download speeds equal to or greater than 100 Mbps.
