At least seven people have gone missing in flooding caused by the partial collapse of the Kakhovka Dam in eastern Ukraine, Russian-appointed authorities in Ukraine’s occupied regions said Wednesday.
“Now we are looking for information about the missing. We know for sure” that seven are missing, the mayor of Kakhovka said.
Rescuers are on the ground, the water level in the city has already begun to decline, although it is still “very significant,” Vladimir Leontiev said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.
Kyiv and Moscow have accused each other of Tuesday’s attack on the dam, which is a fundamental structure in southern Ukraine. Provides water to Crimea, a peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.
Kakhovka Dam, built partly from concrete and partly from earth, has a length of 3273 meters and is one of the largest structures of its kind in Ukraine.
