Since the beginning of the year, about half a thousand companies have been identified on the website of the Office of Working Conditions (ACT) for violating labor laws. Excessive daily driving, a disguised employment contract or the payment of subsidies are some of the situations advertised on the ACT portal until the end of May. Online advertising is an additional sanction applied to companies found to be in violation of labor standards, as part of an ACT review and after a very serious offense or recidivism. In other words, in addition to fines, violators are properly publicly identified. In fact, the list published on the ACT portal not only identifies the company, but also its taxpayer identification number (NIF) and the sector in which it operates, the territory of the country, the characteristic of the offense, the rule violated and the Date. Many of the sanctioned violations relate to occupational safety and health, security of premises and compensation for industrial accidents. More than fifty companies identified this year are in the transportation sector, with rule violations ranging from not presenting a driver’s card to disrespecting others as required by law. Although headquartered in Lisbon, ACT has 32 local divisions throughout the country. In 2021, ACT conducted approximately 40,000 workplace inspection visits.
