According to Jorge Gonçalves of the University of the Algarve’s Marine Science Center, the government has unlocked a financial compensation mechanism for fishermen, one of the factors blocking the project.
“The mechanism has already been studied and approved, but the cost, mode of arrival and which vessels have yet to be determined,” said a marine biologist in charge of seabed biodiversity mapping projects in the Algarve.
The proposed park classification will be publicly discussed this month, the Environment Ministry said on Thursday, stressing that the area has “unique characteristics” in terms of natural heritage. “The offshore area of Albufeira, Lagoa and Silves is one of the richest areas in terms of biodiversity at the national level, being one of the largest offshore rocky reefs,” he notes.
