Non-university public education in the Basque Country faces this Wednesday the first of the two days of strike summoned by ELA, LAB and Steilas in rejection of the draft of the preliminary draft of the future Education law, which is also called Ikasle Sindikatua.
Thousands of students and families will be affected by a strike that the Minister of Education, Jokin Bildarratzdescribed days ago as “preventive”, since the bill is still in the process of debate and the final text is still unknown.
Before the approval of the new regulations, the unions have begun to mobilize and have called to support a second day of strike in public schools next December 14th so that the Basque Government meets their demands and these are reflected in the future law.
ALS, LAB and Steilaswhich make up the majority in the sector, defend a “public, Basque and their own” school and reject the bill presented, considering that its content “far from overcoming the current dual educational model, perpetuates it”.
To overcome this, they demand that the future law have the public school as its axis, that it prohibits concerted centers from charging fees, that it guarantees that the competence to determine the Basque curriculum belongs to the Basque Country and that it establishes a learning model based on immersion in Basque. , among other issues.
If their demands are not met, they have already warned of new protests during the processing of the future law in the Basque Parliament.
Ikasle Sindikatua He has also called a strike. “Euskal Herria. November 30. General student strike together with our teachers” is the message that can be read in his web page.
As he explains, he calls the protest in defense of the Basque public school and against “the new privatization law that the PNV intends to approve.”
In his opinion, the new law supposes “giving even more public resources to the employers of the subsidized private sector and the Catholic Church”, which has as a consequence “greater class-based school segregation”, and, furthermore, “it does not raise linguistic immersion either in Basque”, among other criticisms of the text.
Both ELA, LAB and Steilas as well as the Student Union will take their demands to the streets this Wednesday through different mobilizations that they have called in the three capitals of the CAV.
“Incomprehension” of the Basque Government
The Basque Government has expressed this Tuesday its “misunderstanding” with the two days of strike called and has considered it “very difficult to understand” the real reasons for these strikes. The Executive has established some minimum services.
Executive spokesman Bingen Zupiriain the press conference after the Governing Council, reminded the calling unions that it is not understandable that they organize these strikes on the grounds of rejecting the educational draft when it has not even been approved by the Basque Government nor has it reached Parliament.
