Couriers in New York, USA who work with mobile food delivery apps like Ubereats, Doordash and Grubhub will start charging $17.96 (€16.66) per hour from Monday.
The new law, approved this Sunday by the City of New York and covering about 60,000 workers, provides that the wage increase will be increased to $19.96 (€18.52) an hour from April 1, 2025.
This amount, however, represents a reduction from the original plan, which called for these workers in charge of vehicles to receive $23.82 (€22.10) per hour.
Despite this, dozens of couriers, mostly Hispanics, gathered this Sunday in front of the municipality’s headquarters to celebrate the long-awaited measure.
The law states that wages paid must include both the delivery time and the time the courier waits for a new order.
Currently, the “salary” paid to these workers comes down to tips given by customers.
“The new minimum wage (…) ensures that these workers and their families can earn a living, have greater economic stability, and help our city’s legendary foodservice industry continue to thrive,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement. at a press conference.
To calculate the hourly rate, it was taken into account that mobile app couriers are considered self-employed, so they do not have access to payroll insurance, pay out-of-pocket expenses incurred, and contribute more to Social Security and Health Insurance.
