The municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Coa recorded heavy rain late in the day on Monday, accompanied by hail, which caused significant damage to the vineyard, Mayor Luce said on Tuesday.

In addition to the damage to agriculture and winemaking, several roads and streets were rendered impassable and the municipality’s vehicles cleared the damaged roads so that traffic could be restored.

“Due to the traces of destruction caused by bad weather, it was necessary to clear the roads leading to various points in the municipality, and this operation is ongoing,” stressed the Social Democrat mayor.

João Paulo Souza said he had already contacted the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries in the North (DRAPN) to report on the damage caused by bad weather and to understand the lines of support for affected farmers.

“An assessment of the damage caused by rain and hail has now begun, after which we will be provided with information on whether support lines for weather damage or related credit lines can be opened,” he said. mayor of Phos Coa.

“I have spoken to some farmers who have told us that huge areas under crops have been completely devastated,” said Joao Paulo Souza.

According to the mayor, there are large areas under crops, for which it is still impossible to get an accurate picture of the damage, since they were completely flooded.
