GNR launched this Wednesday nationwide “intense screening” for driving under the influence of alcohol and psychotropic substances to promote safer behavior among drivers and reduce the number of serious traffic accidents.
The National Republican Guard said in a statement that the operation, which will last until June 19, is part of an annual planning run by the European Traffic Police Network (RoadPol), an organization set up to improve road safety and the enforcement of road law.
GNR emphasizes that these pan-European operations have as their main goal the creation of a safer road environment by simultaneously addressing the root causes of accidents and aim to have a positive impact on users by encouraging them to behave more safely.
The corporation also reports that driving under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic substances is “a risk factor that is receiving increased attention in road safety policy at the European level.”
Last year, the GNR found nearly 29,500 drivers with higher blood alcohol levels (BAC) than allowed by law, and 13,184 people were arrested.
