Grade 9 students’ performance in the 2022 Portuguese Language and Mathematics final exams has deteriorated from pre-covid-19 performance, going from a positive national average to a negative one.
Last year, nearly 94,000 Year 9 students took the final exams in Portuguese and Mathematics, which have been suspended since 2020 due to the pandemic, and compared to previous grades, there has been a drop in the national average in both subjects.
Only two out of 10 schools received a positive average score on tests, according to Lusa’s analysis based on data from the Ministry of Education, taking into account only schools that passed more than 50 tests.
According to the results of approximately 172 thousand analyzed tests, out of 1028 schools, 206 received a positive average score, and the remaining 822 received a negative score, that is, 80% did not pass the exams.
Colleges continue to top the table, and public schools, which have many more students taking the exam, drop down the table.
On a scale of zero to five, the average score of the Portuguese tests taken in 2022 was 2.9, in contrast to the always positive averages of the previous five years.
The data also shows that more than 33,000 students (37%) tested negative in a test taken last summer, according to the General Directorate for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC).
Also in math, the average of more than 90,000 tests taken in 2022 was the lowest since 2015, dropping to 2.5 values last year after a positive result in 2019 (3 values).
Most of the students had negative scores in math, only 42% had positive ones: according to the calculations made by Lusa, in a universe of about 92,000 students, 53,537 people had negative scores.
When comparing the sexes, girls scored higher on average than boys, mainly in Portuguese (3 points for them and 2.7 for them), with a residual difference in mathematics (they had 2.6 points and they had 2.5). .
The regions also show different realities: students from the regions of Braga, Coimbra, Porto and Portuguese schools abroad achieved the best average results in Portuguese (three values).
On the other hand, the regions with the most difficulty for Portuguese are Faro, Beja, Portalegre, Setúbal and the Azores Autonomous Region (all with an average of 2.7).
It is in the Azores that we find the highest percentage of students with a negative score (49%), in contrast to students from foreign schools, where 71% of students were able to get a positive score in Portuguese.
In mathematics, the best average results were achieved in Braga and Viana do Castelo (both with 2.8), and the worst in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (2.1).
Coimbra and Viana do Castelo stand out in that half of their students passed the test (50%), as did Portalegre, where 74% of the students “failed” the tests, along with the Azores, where 73% of the reproaches were recorded.
The DGEEC data also shows that families’ socioeconomic status has a large impact on academic outcomes, with students using school social action services having much lower average results than non-beneficiary students.
Of the almost 94,000 students who passed the exams last year, more than half attended schools in the areas of Lisbon (23%), Porto (17%), Setúbal (9%), Braga (8%) and Aveiro (7%).
The Grade 9 National Tests have been reintroduced, but still have no value in the final assessment of the cycle, and serve only for the purposes of monitoring and evaluating learning.
