The Defense Council agreed to a “separate national force”

This Wednesday, the Supreme Council of National Defense gave a positive opinion on the “question of individual national forces” presented by the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, and will hold a new meeting on this issue on December 23.

This information is contained in a note published on the official website of the Presidium of the Republic on the Internet, which does not indicate which national forces or forces are involved.

“The Supreme Council of National Defense met this Wednesday, November 30, 2022, in continuation of yesterday’s meeting under the chairmanship of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Professor Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, and gave a positive opinion. unanimously, to the attention of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Admiral [António Silva Ribeiro]on issues of outstanding national power,” the note said.

“A new meeting was convened for December 23 in order to finalize the agreement on this issue,” the same note adds.

This Wednesday’s meeting was already a follow-up to another on Tuesday, at which there were no conclusions and after which it was announced that work would continue “in the coming days.”

The agenda was not made public, nor was what led to the appointment of new meetings to continue the work.

In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, the Supreme Council of National Defense is a special collegiate body chaired by the President of the Republic for consultations on matters relating to national defense and the organization, functioning and discipline of the armed forces.

This body includes the prime minister, the ministers of state and national defense, foreign affairs, internal affairs, finance, as well as persons responsible for industry, energy, transport and communications, the chief of staff of the armed forces and the leaders of the Navy, army and aviation.

The Supreme Council of National Defense also includes representatives of the Republic and the chairmen of the governments of the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, the chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Assembly of the Republic and two other deputies elected to this body by a two-thirds majority.

Tuesday’s meeting was the 27th meeting convened by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.

The previous one took place on October 3, and on this occasion, the Supreme Council of National Defense gave “a unanimous positive opinion on the new mission in the Mediterranean and adjustments limited to the proposal of the national forces deployed for 2022, approved on November 26, 2021.” .
