Documentary control of people at land, air and maritime borders will be reintroduced during World Youth Day, the first week of August, “for reasons of internal security and public order,” the government announced this Thursday.
“A resolution was approved defining the re-introduction of documentary controls of people at national borders during World Youth Day 2023 for reasons of internal security and public order, similar to the procedure previously adopted in the context of the visit of the Pope to Portugal in 2017,” the message says. Council of Ministers.
The security forces have already clarified that the temporary control of air and sea borders during WYD does not mean that they will be closed, as happened during the state of emergency introduced during the covid-19 pandemic.
In 2017, and on the occasion of the visit of the Pope to Fatima, documentary controls were temporarily restored at air, sea and land borders.
Considered the biggest event of the Catholic Church, WYD will take place from 1 to 6 August in Lisbon and is expected to be attended by about 1.5 million people.
This year WYD will count on the presence of Pope Francis, who will be in Portugal from 2 to 6 August.
WYD Lisbon was originally scheduled for 2022, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
