Portugal with a budget surplus of 1.2% in the first quarter

The general government sector registered a surplus of 1.2% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) said this Friday.

“Given the quarterly figures, and not the year ending in the quarter, the AP balance [Administrações Públicas] in the 1st quarter of 2023 was positive at 761.3 million euros, corresponding to 1.2% of GDP, which is comparable to -0.6% in the same period, according to the INE Quarterly National Accounts by Institutional Sectors.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, there was an increase in income of 9.3% and expenses of 4.3%, “mainly reflecting, in the latter case, a strong increase in interest payments (annual change of 22.3%). 1%)”.
