Funchal captain extends high wind warning until Monday 6pm

The Harbor Master of Funchal has extended until 18:00 on Monday a “strong wind” warning issued due to forecasts for the coast of Madeira.

The previously issued warning, based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), was only in effect until 06:00 Monday.

In a warning issued this Sunday early in the evening, the captain indicates that the IPMA forecast “fresh or very fresh, sometimes strong winds until early morning” on Monday.

As for the swell, waves from two to three meters are expected on the northern coast, and from one to one and a half meters on the south coast.

“Owners and ship owners are advised to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety,” the notice reads.

Strong winds are also hindering traffic at Madeira Airport as 40 flights have already been canceled during the day.

In the afternoon, only three TuiFly planes managed to land between 16:45 and 18:46 from Hannover (16:45), Munich (17:01) and Düsseldorf (18:46). to the information published on the ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal website.

Then three planes managed to fly to the same cities in Germany from 18:00 to 19:49.

ANA also indicates that more than 20 landings of various companies flying to Madeira from different destinations and the corresponding scheduled take-offs have been cancelled.

Two Ryanair flights, one British Airways and one TuiFly were diverted to other airports.

This Sunday, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a statement warning of an “episode of hot and dry weather in the archipelago” of Madeira, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius on the south coast.

“Warm weather warnings will be in effect from Sunday the 25th with orange highs on the 26th and 27th. [segunda e terça-feira]this episode is expected to continue until at least Thursday the 29th,” the IPMA communiqué said.

Also, according to IPMA, this “period will also be marked by increased winds, especially in high altitude areas” and very low relative humidity values, which can increase the risk of fire.

“In addition, during the same period, there may be a transfer of dust in suspension to the Madeira archipelago due to a constant flow from the east,” the note adds.
