One of the latest portraits, by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), sold at auction on Tuesday for £85.3m (€98.7m), a record for a piece of art offered at auction in Europe.
Sold to a Hong Kong collector for more than £65m (€75.2m), Lady with a Fan thus surpassed the previous record of Alberto Giacometti’s Walking Man I, also sold at Sotheby’s. in 2010.
“After a 10-minute battle between four clients who were on the phone and who were present in the hall, the painting set a new record for a work of art in Europe, as well as for Gustav Klimt. portrait at auction,” Sotheby’s said.
The painting is considered the last portrait painted by Klimt before his death.
The painting, depicting a woman of an unknown identity, brings together all the technical values and creative exuberance that define the great works of the artist, marked by an international auction house.
By that time, Klimt began to work with more expressiveness, with more cheerful patterns, colors and shapes such as flowers and dragons, in a style influenced by contemporary artists such as Van Gogh, Matisse and Gauguin.
