Smoke from wildfires in Canada will dissipate over the continent over the next 24 hours.

A cloud of smoke from fires in Canada should dissipate over the continent over the next 24 hours, remaining over the archipelagos until Saturday, but will dissipate in the following days under favorable atmospheric conditions, IPMA said.

The Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) predicts that the cloud should “completely dissipate” over the mainland in the next 24 hours, remaining over the Azores and Madeira archipelagos until July 1, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

“In the following days, atmospheric conditions should be favorable for the cloud to dissipate over the entire territory of the country,” its website says.

The institute explains that the cloud of smoke that covered the entire mainland on Tuesday is in the process of dissipating, currently affecting Spain, the UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The cloud of smoke, on the other hand, increased over the Azores and the Madeira region, as predicted and reported on Tuesday by IPMA based on CAMS (Copernicus Program) forecasts, which indicated an increase, especially in the southern region. mainland Portugal and the Azores area today.

In this information, IPMA emphasized that the cloud of smoke remained at an altitude (over 1000 m).

On the same day, the Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency (APA) issued a clarification on particle levels in the Portuguese mainland and the Azores, saying on Tuesday they had not yet shown the surface effects of a cloud of smoke from fires in Canada.

Particle levels measured by air quality index classes remained between Good and Very Good in mainland Portugal and the Azores, according to the APA.
