A young man, 23, who killed an 83-year-old neighbor in Bairro Pinheiro Torres in Porto, was sentenced this Thursday to 19 years in prison. Another defendant involved in the murder was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Two other defendants, who were tried only for theft, were sentenced to six years in prison.
Thiago Machado used to accompany his grandmother to the old man’s house to bring him bread and a newspaper. He knew that José da Silva lived alone with his 92-year-old wife, who was bedridden and suffering from dementia, and that on the first floor of the house where he lived, he had a safe with large amounts of money.
On November 19, 2021, between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm, in fulfillment of the plan, the four defendants went to the house of an elderly man. Two remained in the car at the entrance to the building. The others, one of them Thiago, attacked the victim. The accused, whom José da Silva did not know, said that he was an EDI technician. As soon as the door opened, Thiago appeared. Both hit him in the face several times in the hallway leading to the bathroom. Then, with the goal of killing him so that Thiago would not be identified and convicted, they decided to use towels to gag the elderly man. They covered his nose and mouth and even tied his hands with another towel, leaving him lying on the floor in agony until he died.
