At least 667 arrested at protests over death of young man shot dead by police

At least 667 people were arrested in France on Thursday during protests after police killed a 17-year-old boy. The information was distributed by the French Interior Ministry and quoted by Reuters.

242 arrests took place in the Paris area, with the majority of those arrested between the ages of 14 and 18. The French government also said 249 police officers were injured on the night of Thursday to Friday.

“These record arrests reflect firm instructions given by the minister,” a source close to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told the newspaper. Le Figaro.

Under the slogan “We are Nahel”, the population demonstrated their indignation towards the security forces, namely the police. In Nanterre, a city on the outskirts of Paris where a 17-year-old teenager known as Nahel M. was shot dead on Tuesday, protesters set fire to cars, barricaded the streets and pelted police with projectiles.

French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a new emergency government meeting, Reuters reported.
