The oldest national newspaper in the world, the Wiener Zeitung, which printed its last daily issue on paper almost 320 years after its founding, is promoting The keeper.
The Vienna-based newspaper Wiener Zeitung has decided to stop publishing the newspaper following recent changes in the law. adopted in April by the Austrian coalition government, which removed a legal requirement that companies must pay to advertise in paper newspapers. The change resulted in the publisher losing millions of euros and forcing it to lay off over 60 employees.
The Wiener Zeitung will continue to exist, now in an online format. The company hopes to be able to release a print edition on a monthly basis, though no official decision has yet been made.
In the latest print daily to hit newsstands this Friday, the Wiener Zeitung published an editorial blaming the new government law for the end of the newspaper’s format. “These are turbulent times for quality journalism. On more and more platforms, serious content is vying for attention with fake content,” he said.
