The Bloco de Esquerda (BE) leader said this Sunday that the housing price problem cannot be solved by a rate hike, criticizing bank profits and defending interest rate cuts.
“The housing problem cannot be solved by raising the level of effort alone, because it simply means that the Bank of Portugal leaves more people with a rope around their necks,” said Mariana Mortagua in Torres Novas (Santarem), saying that the problem will only to be resolved “when banks are forced to renegotiate home loans by lowering the interest rates that are currently being charged to people.”
Speaking to reporters, the bloc leader reacted to the statements of Banco de Portugal deputy governor Clara Raposo, who said on Saturday in an interview with Antena 1 and Jornal de Negócios on the question of the revision of home loans that the existing data is not worrying, however, not ahead of specific figures.
“In dialogue with banks and in the numbers that we have so far, we still have not found a figure that worries us so much in terms of non-compliance or the difficulty of families in fulfilling their obligations,” Clara Raposo said in a statement. which today deserve criticism from the coordinator of the Left Bloc.
“The latest data suggests that in July, when there is a new increase in interest rates, there are people who can pay another 200-300 euros for a mortgage,” said Mariana Mortagua, noting that “there are people who have a payment of 300 euros, and now it has grown to 700 euros.
“And I ask: how is this possible? How is it possible, with an average salary of 800 or 1,000 euros, to maintain a bank commission of 700 euros?” he asks.
According to the BE leader, “banks should be forced to negotiate, they should be forced to reduce the interest rate that is charged to customers, and those who have to pay these costs are not taxpayers,” she defended, pointing out to banks and the size of their arrived.
“Those who have to pay these costs are the same banks that declare 10 million euros of profit per day and have a financial margin in Portugal ten times greater than in any other country in Europe,” he concluded.
