European justice today lifted the parliamentary immunity of former Catalan regional government president Carles Puigdemont and two other MEPs who Spain claims were tried for attempting Catalan independence in 2017.
The decision to lift the parliamentary immunity of Carles Puigdemont, Toni Comin and Clara Ponsati has been taken by the General Court of the European Union and is still open to appeal to a higher body, the Court of Justice of the European Union, which the former President of the Government of the Spanish Autonomous Region of Catalonia has already said would do.
“Nothing ends, on the contrary. Everything continues. We will appeal to the EU Court of Justice,” Puigdemont wrote on Twitter shortly after the court’s decision was made public.
