Seville will finally host the headquarters of the future Spanish Space Agency (AEE) that could be operational in the first quarter of 2023. Therefore, neither Zamudio nor Estella have been chosen, who were the candidacies of the Basque and Navarrese Government.

This is how the Spanish Government decided today at the Council of Ministers meeting, as reported by the Minister for Territorial Policy and spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, at the subsequent press conference.

Isabel Rodríguez has framed this decision in the Government’s commitment to decentralize newly created public bodies to strengthen equal opportunities and social and territorial cohesion.

In total, there were 21 candidates Cabanillas del Campo (Guadalajara), Cebreros (Ávila), Ciudad Real, Elche (Alicante), Estella (Navarra), Huelva, Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria/Agüimes/ San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Las Palmas), León, Ourense, Palencia, Puerto del Rosario (Las Palmas), Puertollano (Ciudad Real), San Javier (Murcia), Tenerife Island (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Seville, Teruel, Tres Cantos (Madrid), Yebes (Guadalajara) and Zamudio.

“Bad news” for the Basque Government

The Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment of the Basque Government has described as “bad news” that Zamudio has not been selected to host the headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency, which will eventually be located in Seville, something that it considers “at least, strange”, being the second “favorable decision” for this city that will also house the Innovation Center for Industrial Transformation and Emissions (INCITE).
