An image of the Little Chapel of the Apparitions will be at the final Mass of the Journey.

The image of Our Lady of Fatima, venerated in the Capelinha das Apariões, will be placed on the altar of Tagus Park in Lisbon’s closing World Youth Day (WYD) celebration, the Sanctuary of Fatima announced.

The image will be on the altar during the so-called “Mass of Departure”, which Pope Francis will preside from 09:00 on 6 August.

“This will be the second time this Image is with Pope Francis outside the Little Chapel of the Apparitions”, in Cova da Iria, after the image was in Rome on October 12 and 13, 2013, “on the occasion of Mary’s Day”. organized in Rome and promoted as part of the Year of Faith”.

The sanctuary emphasizes that “this last exit was of particular importance, since for the first time the icon of Mary was absent from the Little Chapel of the Apparitions during the jubilee pilgrimage” to Fatima.

“The presence of the Image at the closing celebration of the World Youth Day is also a recognition of the value and importance of this icon of Mary in the religiosity of Portugal and the whole world,” as this is the thirteenth exit from the Sanctuary.

Meanwhile, the image of the Virgin Pilgrim of Fatima – a replica of the original image venerated in the Little Chapel of the Apparitions – will be delivered on World Youth Day (WYD) during the pilgrimage starting July 27th. the final stage will take place on July 31 by boat on the Tagus River from Vila Franca de Xira.

The landing of the statue will take place in Cais da Marinha, and on the final stage of the pilgrimage will be accompanied by about four dozen typical boats from Tajo.

Between 27 and 30 July, around 400 young people will carry the image on foot between the Sanctuary of Fatima and Vila Franca de Xira, as part of a pilgrimage organized by the Corpus Nacional Escutas (CNE) with the support of the Sanctuary of Fatima.

“This pilgrimage represents an international opportunity for young people to meet the dynamics of fun, prayer, exchange and an incredible way to experience the pre-journeys for these participants,” said CNE, adding that after arriving in Lisbon, “the image of Our Lady of Fatima will travel to the Church of San Tomás de Aquino as the core of a peace-themed activity – Fatima’s Message, Exploration and Peace Building – that will allow visitors to send a message, a call for peace to world leaders.”

However, the WYD reported that, similar to what happened in Panama in 2019, also on this World Youth Day, “The statue of the pilgrim Our Lady of Fatima will be present in the moments of the rosary, personal prayer and in dynamics. promoting the world.”

Lisbon has been chosen by Pope Francis for the next World Youth Day, which will take place from 1 to 6 August this year, with the main ceremonies taking place in the Eduardo VII Park and Tagus Park, north of the Park. das Nações, on the banks of the Tagus River, on land in the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures.

WYD was born at the initiative of Pope John Paul II after the success of the meeting organized in 1985 in Rome as part of the International Year of Youth.

The first meeting took place in 1986 in Rome, having already passed, in its current form, in Buenos Aires (1987), Santiago de Compostela (1989), Czestochowa (1991), Denver (1993), Manila (1995), Paris. (1997), Rome (2000), Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), Sydney (2008), Madrid (2011), Rio de Janeiro (2013) ), Krakow (2016) and Panama (2019).

This year’s event, which will feature Pope Francis, was originally scheduled for 2022 but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pope Francis was the first to register for WYD Lisbon 2023 on October 23, 2022 at the Vatican after the Angelus celebration.
