Civil Protection asks the population to stay at home due to bad weather

The Secretary of State for Civil Protection this Thursday expressed regret over the death of a person in Algés due to bad weather and issued an appeal to the population to stay at home as much as possible.

“For people to stay at home as much as possible, limiting outdoor movement to those that are absolutely necessary, and that they can protect themselves and that they can also protect themselves,” Secretary of State for Civil Protection Patricia asked this Thursday. Gaspar at a press conference in Carnachid (Oeiras) of the National Office for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection to take stock of the bad weather situation in Portugal.

A public warning has been issued to all Portuguese, but especially to those who live in areas most affected by bad weather, namely the areas of Lisbon and Setúbal.

Patricia Gaspard warned people to be careful about all the information that is broadcast by the media and published by the National Office for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection, as well as the Sea and Atmospheric Institute.

“It is absolutely essential that the advice given by the Civil Protection and all information transmitted by the municipalities be scrupulously respected,” he urged.

National Emergency and Civil Protection Commander Andre Fernandez warned the public that the meteorological situation this morning could happen again the next morning, and therefore reiterated the request for people to protect themselves, pack their home and try to minimize “water entering their homes.”

“The weather pattern is a discontinuous pattern, it is a picture that will worsen during the day, namely in the early hours of this Thursday to tomorrow, and here it is actually expected that there may be other situations, perhaps smaller ones, but we need to be careful” he said at a press conference.

André Fernandez called on the population to take protective measures, especially in already affected areas.

“The advice we give is a warning to the population for everyone to take self-protection measures in historically vulnerable areas and who have already been affected by these situations throughout the morning, to take self-protection measures, namely to minimize the entry of water into their homes and, above all, self-defense behavior, going back to their homes rather than walking through areas affected by tap water or flooded.”

André Fernandez said that some of those who needed rescue last night were among those who took risks and advanced into areas that were already flooded and therefore advised them not to do so and respect the signs posted in areas with certain risk and danger.

“Do not pass on these recordings, do not put yourself at risk, be careful, careful and, above all, with adequate behavior in this meteorological situation,” he asked.

The bad weather recorded in Portugal last night has already displaced 27 people and 1,977 incidents, with 913 incidents occurring in the Lisbon area, according to the National Office for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection.
