The General Directorate of Health (DGS) and the ASAE advised citizens this Thursday to avoid eating cornbread in several areas of the country due to 187 suspected cases of toxic infection.

According to the DGS and ASAE statement, the places where bread cannot be consumed are: Pombal, Ancien, Leiria, Marinha Grande, Pedrogan Grande (Leiria area), Ourén (Santaren), Figueira da Foz, Condeixa a Nova and Coimbra (Coimbra) Ilhavo and Vagos (Aveiro).

DGS and ASAE state that “cornbread is and should remain an integral part of the Portuguese diet”. However, he cautions that “it is recommended that consumption of this food should be discontinued in the above geographic areas.” The statement also guarantees that the competent authorities have taken measures “in the sense of limiting the raw materials used in the production of cornbread, which is suspected, of constantly monitoring this phenomenon and in close cooperation between all those involved.”
