D. Rui Valerio is the new patriarch of Lisbon.

This Thursday, Pope Francis appointed D. Rui Valerio as the new Patriarch of Lisbon. The information was put forward in a statement sent to the newsrooms.

The 58-year-old bishop succeeded D. Manuel Clemente, thus becoming the 18th Patriarch of Lisbon. So far, he has served as the bishop of the military and security forces.

He was born in Urqueira, in the municipality of Ourem, and was ordained a priest in 1991 in Fatima.

Belonging to the missionaries of Montfort, he was the first Portuguese priest of this congregation to be ordained a bishop.

D. Rui Valerio will take office on September 2 at 11:00 am at the Patriarchal Cathedral. “The solemn entrance will take place the next day, Sunday, September 3, at 16:00 in the church of Santa Maria de Belen,” you can read.

The monastics chose “In Manibus Tuis” as their episcopal motto, which means “You are my God, in your hands I place my destiny.”

In his first letter to the Church of Lisbon, he emphasized the intention to listen, “leave no one behind”, and called for the participation of young people in the life of the diocese, because “without them the Church simply dies.”

Manuel Clemente, who has headed the Lisbon Patriarchate for the past 10 years, turned 75 on July 16, the expected age to submit his resignation from the post of head of the diocese.
