The defense minister acknowledged this Saturday that there are difficulties in recruiting troops in Portugal and elsewhere, but assured that the government is working to attract and retain personnel.
“The problem of recruitment and retention difficulties has been recognized first and foremost in Portugal and in other countries that face these difficulties. We have taken a set of measures to address these difficulties,” he said.
Helena Carreiras spoke to reporters at the Lisbon Naval Base at the end of the reception ceremony for the Portuguese ship NRP Setúbal, which took part in another mission under the Mar Aberto initiative.
Asked about a report by the weekly newspaper Expresso on Friday that the navy and army had recorded the highest number of surprise departures in 2022 and the Portuguese armed forces had lost 7.2% of their personnel this year, the minister said the complex measures to deal with these difficulties.
Helena Carreiras added that the recorded values also belong to the exceptional measures within the framework of covid 19.
“It should be noted that in relation to the published data, there is a situation that helps to explain the volume of shipments in recent years. This is due to the exceptional measures within the framework of covid 19, an exceptional situation that allowed the extension of contracts and the containment of travel,” he said.
