More than a hundred municipalities in 14 districts are at maximum fire risk

More than 100 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Santarém, Leiria, Portalegre, Beja, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Aveiro, Coimbra, Viseu, Braga, Porto, Vila Real and Bragança pose the highest risk of rural fires this Wednesday, according to the agency. IPMA.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has also placed more than 40 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Beja, Lisbon, Leiria, Coimbra, Aveiro, Vila Real, Porto, Braga and Portalegre at very high risk.

Other municipalities in Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Leiria, Santarem, Setúbal, Portalegre, Évora and Beja are under high fire threat this Wednesday.

Due to weather conditions, the risk of fire will continue until at least Sunday.

This risk, defined by IPMA, has five levels, from low to high. Calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the last 24 hours.

Due to hot weather with maximum temperatures that can exceed 40 degrees, IPMA has placed the areas of Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Coimbra, Castelo Branco and Santarém under a red alert level until 21:00 this Wednesday, after which yellow until 21:00 on Thursday.

The rest of the continent will be under an orange warning (the second most severe) these days, including due to hot weather, according to information published on the institute’s website.
