The debt of families, companies and the state increased to 806,900 in the 1st half of the year

The debt of the non-financial sector (public administrations, companies and individuals) increased by 12.900 million euros in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year, to 806.900 million euros, the Bank of Portugal (BdP) said this Wednesday.

Of this amount, 442 billion euros belong to the private sector (private companies and individuals) and 364,900 million euros to the public sector (public administrations and public companies), according to a statistical information note published this Wednesday on the central bank’s website.

Public sector debt increased by 13,400 million euros, mainly to individuals (10,600 million euros), mainly due to household investments in savings certificates, and also to public administrations (5,900 million euros).

On the other hand, public sector debt to foreign countries decreased by 4.300 million euros. Private sector debt decreased by 600 million euros and private sector debt decreased by 700 million euros, mainly due to the financial sector (800 million euros).

On the other hand, the debt of private companies increased by 100 million euros, of which 300 million – with the financial sector, which was partially offset by a reduction of 200 million – with individuals.

As a percentage of GDP, non-financial sector debt in the first half of the year underwent an evolution opposite to that observed for nominal value, with a decrease from 331.9% at the end of 2022 to 320.3% of GDP in the next half of the year. the first six months of this year.

The debt of both the public sector and the debt of the private sector as a ratio to GDP decreased from 146.9% to 144.8% and from 185.0% to 175.4%, respectively.

In its analysis for June, BdP found that private company debt rose by 0.6% compared to the same month in 2022, while private debt increased by 0.9%.

In both sectors, debt continued to grow, although the annual rate of change decreased compared to the end of 2022 by 1.6 and 3.2 percentage points, respectively.
