Two Portuguese among those killed in the explosion on the island of Jersey

Two Portuguese people are among those killed in the explosion and collapse of a residential building on the island of Jersey, owned by the British crown, which occurred on Saturday, the Portuguese government confirmed, providing support to the families of the victims. According to English newspapers, the victims were Romeu and Luisa de Almeida, aged 67 and 64, who had lived in Jersey for more than ten years.

“After the explosion in Jersey, the deaths of two Portuguese were confirmed, which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs deeply regrets,” said the message sent to Luce, a source in the ministry, headed by Joao Gomes Cravinho.

According to the same source, “monitoring of the situation and support for the families of the victims is carried out through the Consulate General of Portugal in London and the Honorary Consulate in Jersey.”

The latest balance of the explosion and collapse of a residential building in the Sanint Helier area, Jersey, this Sunday showed that five people died in the accident.

After two days of searching, the authorities admitted that there were no survivors, although four people were still missing.

A gas leak is the alleged cause of the accident, which occurred on Saturday at 04:00 local time (05:00 Lisbon) in the island’s capital. CCTV footage shows a fireball enveloping a three-story building by the sea, followed by thick smoke.
