Losses of the Lisbon parish of Benfica amount to 1.8 million euros

The losses of the Benfica district in Lisbon due to heavy rain recorded at dawn and on Tuesday morning amount to 1.8 million euros, advanced to Luce, the president of the council, so far.

“We had a slightly different profile today than what happened on Wednesday. [dia 07]🇧🇷 Today we had the same huge pressure on the lower part of Benfica, that is, on the entire territory of Rua da Republic of Peru, Estrada de Benfica, Rua Emilia das Neves and Rua da Maya. Therefore, all models are above the underground riverbeds,” Ricardo Marquez explained.

It is an area of ”old creeks” that are “under a lot of pressure” with heavy rainfall, according to the PS-elected mayor. These areas had “huge problems with flooded basements and commercial establishments.”

Ricardo Márquez also added that in the area of Bairro da Boavista, which has so far “been able to withstand the pressure well”, today there is an entire street no. .

The Mexican embassy, located on the Estrada de Monsanto, next to the Pina Manique roundabout, was hit by flooding, leaving “several vehicles submerged”.

According to Ricardo Márquez, the Ajuda de Berço facilities located in this area of Monsanto were also affected by the flooding, which led to the displacement of the children to the headquarters located on Rua Jorge Barradas, in the same parish.

“This heavy rain ended up having a greater impact on public infrastructure and also led to the closure of some schools in the parish,” he said this afternoon.

In the early morning, several roads were temporarily impassable.

“At the moment everything is open, but it was a very difficult morning for the maintenance and cleaning services of public spaces,” he explained, noting that after the flood last Wednesday, local businesses were again affected by more floods, “due to the fact that water flowed out of the toilets, floors.”

The official also highlighted the concern, which he said he had already conveyed to the mayor of Lisbon, that Benfica was “outside the intervention area of the Lisbon Drainage Plan.”

“We need to look at this area of the city with different eyes, because problems arise here too. The Lisbon drainage plan does not solve the problems of Benfica, which needs urgent intervention at this level of drainage,” he stressed. , recalling the specific dimensions of the pipes, which will need to be different in order to increase the ability to retain groundwater.

Intense and incessant rain that fell at dawn on Tuesday caused hundreds of accidents, including floods, tree falls and cuts to roads in the areas of Lisbon, Setúbal and Portalegre, where there are records of several evacuees.

In the Lisbon area, bad weather has restricted entry into the city, prompting authorities to urge people to stay at home if possible.
