President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa noted this Saturday that Fernando Pimenta was the most decorated athlete in recent years after being interrogated about criticisms made to him by a canoeist.
“I intend to call him as soon as I can and congratulate him,” Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said after being asked about the criticism he received from canoeist Fernando Pimenta, who won his 133rd medal at major international competitions.
The President of the Republic spoke to reporters at the airport in Sao Tome and Principe, where he landed at 17:56 to attend the XIV Summit of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
Marcelo noted that Fernando Pimenta is perhaps the athlete who has received the most awards in recent years.
“He was not a footballer, he was a canoeist,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stressed, adding that Fernando Pimenta “deserved” the award “several times”: once from his predecessor Jorge Sampaio and twice from himself.
“He will certainly be the most titled,” he said.
After these statements, the press service of the President of the Republic reported that Marcelo Rebelo de Souza had already spoken to a canoeist from Sao Tome.
