73 people died this Thursday and 43 were injured in a fire that destroyed a five-story building in downtown Johannesburg this morning, the South African city’s emergency services said.
Agency spokesman Robert Mulaudzi told local media that firefighters were alerted to the fire around 1:30 am (00:30 am in Lisbon) and that among the dead was “a child who could be a deity of 1 to 2 years.”
Mulaudzi further explained that the building was “informal housing” where homeless people moved in search of housing. Since there were no official lease agreements, it is impossible to determine how many people were actually in the premises.
Firefighters brought the fire under control, the building was evacuated and search operations began.
