Pensioners return to the streets remembering that “the problems have not disappeared after the elections”

After the summer break, hundreds of pensioners have once again gathered in front of the Bilbao City Hall to demand a minimum pension of 1,080 euros. “Mobilization continues to be our guarantee to achieve our objectives,” they defend.

He Euskal Herria Pensioners Movement has resumed its usual concentrations in Bilbao and has warned that after the last general elections “the problems of pensioners have not disappeared” and the increase in the cost of living is “worsening” their living conditions.

As every Monday from January 15, 2018the group has concentrated in front of the City Council in favor of “decent” pensions.

After claiming a minimum pension of 1080 euros “as an immediate commitment from the next government”, they have also called for “supplementing the minimum income of pensioners to 1,080 euros in the next budgets”, both in the Basque Autonomous Community and in Navarra, and to restore for December “the compensatory payment for the loss of purchasing power of pensions”, among other demands.

After the general elections on July 23, the Pensioners Movement calls on the next executive to include their proposals in the government program: “There have been elections, but the problems of pensioners have not disappeared,” they stressed.

They have claimed that “the increase in the cost of living is drastically worsening living conditions” and makes it “increasingly difficult to access a healthy diet and medicines, decent housing conditions that guarantee mobility and an adequate temperature, access to social and health care services for dependents.”

They have recalled that “the interannual CPI is 5% and the underlying CPI for 2023 is 6.2%” and they have asked themselves “how is it possible to maintain and improve our living conditions if the minimum pension is 743 euros and 167,718 pensioners, especially women, pensioners in the Basque Autonomous Community and 51,306 in Navarra have incomes below 1,080 euros”.

For all these reasons, they have once again shown that they will continue to question the political class: “We will report our demands immediately to the political groups in Congress. We will demand a position from the parliaments of Navarra and the CAV regarding the supplement report to 1080 that we have delivered. We know that mobilization continues to be our guarantee to achieve our objectives and we will do so”, they concluded.
