A new model for completion of secondary education and access to higher education comes into force. The changes were published on Friday in the Diário da República newspaper.
The new regime will be implemented in stages, starting with students in 11th grade and ending with those entering 10th grade this year. Students in grades 12 will take tests using a special model that will be used from 2020. According to the decision now published, exams will count for 25% of the final average score in the subject.
Students will take three exams: Portuguese (which is again compulsory) and two more of their choice, depending on the course the student intends to take. There have also been changes to the calculation of the final average, with the weight now varying depending on whether items are annual, biennial or triennial.
