The resumption of classes means for many teachers leaving their families and living in difficult conditions, like Ana Rita, who is already a grandmother and lives alone in a rented room in Buraque, Amadora. Ana Rita is a 1st cycle teacher and last year she finally joined the staff. At 49, he stayed at school 300 kilometers from home. He was born in Viseu and tried to teach in the region, close to his family, but his debts grew every day.
“One year I was on a seven-hour week schedule, the next year I was on a five-hour schedule,” he recalled to Lusa, saying he tried to find a part-time job but took home about 300 euros at the end of the month. The decision was to accept a vacancy where there is a large shortage of teachers: in the south of the country. Ana Rita has already spent seven years in the Lisbon area and one year in Portimão, always in rented rooms. He taught in 18 schools from north to south and lived in “14 rooms here and there.”
