The Home Secretary said this Monday that he will reassess properties owned by the PSP and GNR, which could help find accommodation solutions for students who are children of security forces.
“It is planned to re-evaluate the existing heritage [da PSP e da GNR] which today is not in demand, with the aim of converting it into housing for students who are children of Guard soldiers or PSP agents,” José Luis Carneiro told reporters after visiting housing for children of the security forces who study in the city of Coimbra.
In addition to the reconversion, the minister also raised the possibility of selling properties that are not in demand, “using the results of this sale to reinvest in the restoration of another building, in other regions of the country or in new construction, depending on the needs identified by social services.”
According to the Minister of Internal Affairs, there are “old buildings that were used to house police officers and which are no longer needed for police officers today” and which could be “converted into student accommodation or even disposed of over time.”
The sale could allow for reinvestment in areas of the country where there is greater real estate pressure, namely the metropolitan areas of Porto and Lisbon.
“Especially in Lisbon, the cost of living has increased exponentially and it has become difficult to carry out professional activities in large urban centers,” he stressed.
José Luis Carneiro confirmed the intention to provide an additional 1,500 housing units by 2026 for GNR military personnel, PSP agents and their families with a global investment of €60 million, of which €40 million will come from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
According to him, of the 40 million euros associated with the PRR, eight million euros worth of contracts have been concluded (of which about three million euros are under execution).
All investments were made with the aim of improving “attractive conditions for security forces and services,” he emphasized.
José Luis Carneiro visited this Monday in Coimbra the housing for the sons and daughters of GNA soldiers and PSP agents who are entering higher education in that city.
According to the minister, PSP and GNR have “more than 550 premises” in the country that serve this purpose.
