The annual inflation rate increased to 3.7% in August, remaining 0.6 percentage points below the level recorded in July, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) confirmed on Tuesday.
The annual rate of change in the consumer price index (IPC) released today by INE is the same (rounded to one decimal place) as the quick estimate released on August 31.
According to the statistics institute, “this acceleration is mainly explained by the behavior of fuel prices, which contributed to a 0.7 percentage point increase in the annual CPI fluctuation.”
The core inflation rate (the total index excluding unprocessed food and energy) for the reporting month recorded a change of 4.5% against 4.7% in June.
The change in the energy products index was -6.5% (-14.9% in the previous month), and the unprocessed food index slowed to 6.4% compared to 6.8% in the previous month.
In August, the monthly CPI change was 0.3% (-0.4% in the previous month and -0.3% in August 2022), while the average change over the last 12 months fell to 6.8% versus 7.3%. in the year ending July.
The average change in the consumer price index over the past 12 months excluding housing, which is the benchmark for rent renewals next year, was 6.9% (6.94%) in August.
