Portuguese cinemas attracted 1.4 million visitors in August, up 44.8% from August 2022, with Cinemundo dethroning NOS Lusomundo Audiovisuais as the box office leader.
According to data released on Tuesday by the Institute of Film and Audiovisual Arts (ICA), cinemas recorded 1,469,574 spectators and 8.9 million euros in box office receipts in August, up 44.8% and 56.2% respectively from then same period. in 2022.
Compared to the rest of 2023, August was the second best month of the year for both viewership and box office receipts, behind July, which recorded 1.7 million visits and €10.5 million.
In total this year, from January to August, cinema revenue was 51.5 million euros, which is 16.7 million euros more than in the same period in 2022. In terms of cinema attendance, figures increased by 41.4%, from 6.1 million to 8.6 million viewers.
Thanks to theatrical releases in July and August, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was the year’s most-watched movie in theaters, with 837,577 viewers, ahead of Fast and Furious X (689,506 viewers).
The top three most watched films by Portuguese people this year until August were “Barbie,” “The Fast and the Furious,” dethroning NOS Lusomundo Audiovisuais, the market leader for several years.
In August, Cinemundo, which distributes catalogs from Warner Bros and Universal Pictures, had 44.2% of the distribution market by gross revenue (22.8 million), and NOS Lusomundo Audiovisua had 39.4% (20.3 million), according to ICA.
In August, the most watched Portuguese film in cinemas was Sunset: The Mystery of the Necklace of Sant Cajo by Manuel Purez, which was watched by 105,134 viewers.
