Government approves increase in national minimum wage and exceptional support for vulnerable families

The government approved this Thursday a resolution to raise the minimum wage to 760 euros, from January 2023 by 55 euros. An exceptional support for vulnerable families has also been approved in the amount of 240 euros, which will be paid from the 23rd of this month.

“The government today approved an increase in the national minimum wage, which will take effect from January 1, 2023, from the 705 euros we have today to 760 euros,” said the Minister of Labor. Solidarity and social protection, Ana Mendez Godinho, noting that this figure means that since 2015 NMS has increased by about 50%.

The €55 increase “means the biggest increase in absolute terms” of the national minimum wage, he said.

The exceptional support will cover about one million families (1,037 thousand households) and will be paid in a single payment on December 23 for those who have an IBAN registered with the Social Security Service, as well as by postal order in other situations.

This support “will be paid to all households that have already received exceptional support to compensate for inflation,” said the Minister of Labor, namely families that receive emergency assistance of 60 euros in April and June.

The purpose of this new support, which will be paid out in December, is to support the “increased spending” of the “most vulnerable families” in the face of rising inflation and its impact on the cost of living, the minister said.

According to the reports presented by the minister, a family with two children in which both members of the couple earn SMN will receive a total of 760 euros in emergency assistance at the end of this year, taking into account 60 euros paid in April and July and 350 euros in October ( under the broader Family First measure) and 240 euros, to be paid at the end of this month.

Ana Méndez Godinho stressed that “the government always strives to be on the side of the people and support them in an exceptional way” with “various tools to counter the situation we are facing.”

According to an agreement signed between the government, the UGT and the employers’ confederations, the goal is to achieve a national minimum wage of 900 euros by the end of the legislature (2026). The government proposes to increase the minimum wage to 760 euros in 2023, to 810 euros in 2024, to 855 euros in 2025 and to 900 euros in 2026.
