President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will meet United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday in New York before addressing the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
The head of state will travel to New York this Sunday afternoon from Toronto after his five-day official visit to Canada dedicated to the Portuguese expatriate communities in that country.
According to the agenda published by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will speak on the first day of the annual general debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday and will later attend a reception hosted by the President. This will be his fifth appearance representing Portugal in the annual general debate between the heads of state and government of the 193 United Nations (UN) member states in New York, which he also participated in in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2021.
On Monday, in addition to meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will meet with the President of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis.
In New York, where he will stay until Friday, the head of state will take part in summits on sustainable development and climate action.
This week, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will also hold meetings with representatives of Portuguese communities in the North American states of New York and New Jersey.
The 78th session of the UN General Assembly is dedicated to the theme “Restoring trust and reviving global solidarity: accelerating action to achieve the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all people.”
