Teachers and school staff begin a week of strike today

Teachers and school staff this Monday begin a week of strike called by the Union of All Education Workers (STOP) to regain their seniority and fight what they say are various injustices in the sector.

After the first days of the school year, around 1.3 million students begin the first week of classes this Monday, but some may find the school gates closed due to a teachers and staff strike.

The strike, which will last until Friday, was called by Stop and is the first strike to affect teaching in 2023/2024, with professionals pledging to support last year’s protest until their demands are answered.

At stake is the recovery of six years, six months and 23 days of frozen seniority, as well as a number of other injustices felt by teachers and non-teachers.

As for teachers, “Stop” refers to teachers who are subject to the rules of the sickness mobility regime and the working conditions of teachers in a single teaching mode, in the first cycle.

On the other hand, the union highlights the shortage of technical and operational assistants in schools and the precarious working conditions of those who are available.

On the last of the five days of the strike, on Friday, teachers and non-teachers take to the streets as part of a national demonstration of all education professionals in Lisbon.

At the end of August, Stop leader André Pestana also called on professionals to organize strike funds during the week of protest.

In addition to the “Stop” strike, a strike over overwork, overtime and non-teaching components, called by the platform of nine trade unions, which includes Fenprof and the National Federation of Education (FNE), has been ongoing since Tuesday.
