The employed population with higher education in the North is declining by almost 10% per year.

In the Northern region, the employed population with higher education decreased by 9.7% in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. However, the labor market as a whole showed positive dynamics, increasing by 0.7%.

The data appears in the Norte Conjuntura bulletin for the second quarter of 2023, published this Wednesday by the Northern Regional Commission for Coordination and Development. In terms of employment at other levels of education, the increase was 5.1% in secondary and tertiary education and 7% in education up to the third cycle of basic education.

The unemployment rate in the North fell to 6.4%, down 1.2 percentage points from the previous quarter (Portugal’s unemployment rate fell to 6.1%). Exports of goods from the North fell 0.6% year-on-year, which compares with a national decline of 4.8%.

The North’s tourism performance continued its upward trajectory, with overnight stays at the region’s tourism establishments increasing by 14.5% compared to the second quarter of 2022. Key indicators related to the construction sector maintained an unfavorable growth trajectory. previous quarters: compared to the second quarter of last year, 10.1% fewer buildings were licensed.

Inflation in the North continued its slowing trajectory and fell by 3.7 percentage points to 4.2%. The total amount of credit extended to the Northern economy also fell 0.5% year-on-year after rising sequentially over the past few quarters.
